04.11.2021 Sabah Fakhri (Bild), der 1933 in Aleppo geborene syrische Sänger der klassischen arabischen Musik, ist am 2. November 2021 in Damaskus gestorben. Fakhri war einer der wenigen arabischen Sänger, die Konzerte in Europa, Asien, Amerika und Australien gaben. Fakhri wurde in der ganzen arabischen Welt für seine traditionelle Musik bekannt und verehrt und vielfach für seine Arbeit geehrt.

He soon rose to fame to become one of the Arab world’s legendary tenors and one of its exceptionally charismatic entertainers.

Fakhri was a world class Tarab singer, an Arabic form of music associated with emotional evocation that could last for hours.

Fakhri gave performances that would stretch through the night, breaking only to recite the call to prayer at dawn. He entered the record books in 1968 for singing for 10 hours without a break in the Venezuelan capital Caracas.

The late artist held several positions as he was elected head of artists, vice president of the Arab Artists Union, and director of the Syrian Song Festival, according to a profile provided by SANA.

He was awarded the Syrian Order of Merit in 2007 “in recognition of his distinguished achievements in Syrian and Arab art”, noted the profile.

Mr. Fakhri sang tarab, an emotive and repetitive form of traditional Arabic singing. The word roughly translates to “exaltation,” and everything about the music was designed to invoke a trancelike state of ecstasy or transcendence among his listeners. Notes were held for 10 seconds or longer, songs extended to nearly an hour, and one piece often bled into another. In Mr. Fakhri’s hometown of Aleppo, crowds often gathered for his evening concerts and listened to him sing until daybreak.

Der Meister des Tarab

Zu Beginn des Krieges in Syrien erkrankte Fakhri an altersbedingter Demenz und zeigte sich in der Folge kaum noch in der Öffentlichkeit. Er lebte zurückgezogen im Libanon und äußerte sich nicht zu den Geschehnissen in seinem Heimatland. Auch deswegen betrauern nun Syrer jeglicher politischer Couleur seinen Tod.

Alle Syrer sind im Verlust vereint. Eine Einigkeit, die in Folge der Fragmentierung Syriens eine Seltenheit geworden ist. Ebenso wie das alte Aleppo nahezu verschwunden ist. Mit Fakhri verliert das alte Aleppo nicht nur seinen letzten Repräsentanten, Syrien verliert auch seine letzte große Musikikone.
