Mit der Organisation seiner für die ganze neuere Musikgeschichte wichtigen und prägenden Veranstaltungen wie dem Newport Jazz Festival und dem Newport Folk Festival setzte Wein weltweit Massstäbe für nachfolgende Grossanlässe in Orten von Woodstock bis Berlin, von Nizza bis Tokyo.

George Wein, Newport Jazz Festival co-founder, dies at 95

A former jazz club owner and aspiring pianist, Wein launched the Newport Jazz Festival in 1954 under pouring rain and with a lineup for the heavens — Billie Holiday and Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald and Lester Young. Louis Armstrong was there the following year and Duke Ellington made history in 1956. (…) Wein led the festival for more than 50 years and performers would include virtually every major jazz star, from Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk to Charles Mingus and Wynton Marsalis. Just in 1965, the bill featured Frank Sinatra, Count Basie, John Coltrane, Ellington, Gillespie, Davis and Monk.

Critic Gene Santoro observed in 2003 that without Wein, "everything from Woodstock to Jazz at Lincoln Center might have happened differently — if it happened at all." Wein "can justifiably claim to have invented, developed and codified the contemporary popular music festival," Santoro wrote.

Wein didn’t only work with jazz musicians. In 1959, he and Pete Seeger began a companion folk festival that would feature early performances by Joan Baez and Jose Feliciano among others and track the evolution of Bob Dylan from earnest troubadour to rule-breaking rock star.

Then jazz came to town, under the supervision of George Wein, an ambitious young promoter already with enough clout to persuade a host of major artists, including Billie Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Young, Oscar Peterson, the Modern Jazz Quartet and Gerry Mulligan, to perform on a specially erected stage in the grounds of a local sporting club. A crowd of 11,000, a mixture of serious jazz fans from out of town and curious local socialites, sat on folding chairs, becoming the first audience for an event that established a template for open-air festivals of popular music emulated around the world.

Wein studierte Piano bei Margaret Chaloff, Sam Sax sowie Teddy Wilson und begann bereits in jungen Jahren, sein Geld mit Jazzmusik zu verdienen. 1946 arbeitete er mit Max Kaminsky, 1947 mit Edmond Hall, 1948 mit Wild Bill Davison, danach mit Jimmy McPartland, Bobby Hackett, Jo Jones, Vic Dickenson und anderen.

1950 eröffnete er mit dem Storyville seinen ersten Club in Boston. Unter dem gleichen Namen führte er sein eigenes Platten-Label Storyville bis 1965. Seit 1954 organisierte er das Newport Jazz Festival. Im Laufe der Zeit initiierte er mit seiner Frau Joyce Wein andere wichtige Festivals, wie die Grande Parade du Jazz in Nizza, das Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl, die New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Fair und das Boston Globe Jazz Festival. Ab 1964 war er mit Ralf Schulte-Bahrenberg und Joachim-Ernst Berendt an der Organisation der Berliner Jazztage beteiligt. Daneben machte Wein weiter Musik und lehrte Jazz in seiner Heimatstadt Boston. 1959 besuchte er mit einer All-Star-Gruppe Europa. 2007 verkaufte er die Rechte am Newport Jazz Festival und dem Newport Folk Festival an die Festival Network LLC unter Leitung von Chris Shields, die die Festivals mit verändertem Konzept fortsetzte.

Zum Newport Folk Festival

Begründet wurde das Festival von Joyce und George Wein, der bereits 1954 das Newport Jazz Festival ins Leben gerufen hatte, und Albert Grossman, dem späteren Manager von Bob Dylan. Nach einer zweijährigen Pause (1960/1961) wurde es mit Unterstützung von Pete Seeger und Theodore Bikel fortgesetzt.

Zahlreiche der bedeutendsten Blues- und Folkmusiker sind auf dem Newport-Festival aufgetreten – unter anderem John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf und Lightnin’ Hopkins. Viele andere bekannte Künstler hatten ihren ersten grossen Auftritt in Newport, so etwa 1959 Joan Baez, 1963 Bob Dylan, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Phil Ochs, 1965 Donovan, 1967 Arlo Guthrie, Leonard Cohen, 1968 Pentangle und 1969 James Taylor.

Am 25. Juli 1965 wurde Bob Dylan in Newport ausgebuht und als "Verräter" beschimpft, als er mit der Paul Butterfield Blues Band auftrat und zur Elektrogitarre griff. Seinen Auftritt brach er nach nur 15 Minuten ab; erst 2002 kam Dylan wieder nach Newport zurück.

Wie die meisten Jazzfans hatte auch Wein eine missionarische Ader, deswegen war es ihm nach Jahren als Betreiber eines kleinen Clubs in Boston wichtig, dass er mit einem Festival ein sehr viel grösseres Publikum erreichte. 7'000 Leute fanden auf der Wiese vor dem Newport Casino Tennis- und Sportclub Platz. Der Film "Jazz an einem Sommerabend" des Modefotografen Bert Stern setzte der fünften Festivalausgabe von 1958 ein Denkmal in der Filmgeschichte.

Am Montag ist in seiner Wohnung in Manhattan der Promoter und Produzent George Wein verstorben. Aufgewachsen als Sohn einer jüdischen Familie ausserhalb von Boston, galt Wein als begabter Pianist, verlegte sich aber früh auf die Ausrichtung von Konzerten.

I was very saddened to learn of the passing, at age 95, of the great impresario, George Wein. He was a true icon who did more for folk, blues and jazz music than perhaps any other promoter in history - the Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals, and Jazz Fest in New Orleans, were just his most famous and enduring ventures. There were so many more that he had a hand in., large and small, around the country and abroad. Throughout his long career, he was beloved by artists and audiences alike for his fairness, respect for the musicians and impeccable production values. George was a true class act and a decent guy.

If you’ve ever been to a music festival then you’ve experienced the visionary genius of George Wein. He invented the modern music festival when he launched both the Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals. He was instrumental in creating the New Orleans jazz and heritage festival, the festival I grew up going to as was a child. He was also instrumental in creating the Saratoga jazz festival where I met Suleika and fell deeper in love with jazz. His presence imbued all these places. By giving many of our greatest culture bearers a platform he helped save America’s soul and influence the world for generations to come. Art as we know it wouldn’t be the same without him.
